JUSTICE AS FAIRNESS In this introductory chapter I sketch some ofthe main ideas ofthe theory ofjustice I wish to develop. The book is principally a critique and revision of John Rawls's basic ideas in A Theory of Justice (1971). Historically, philosophers such as Locke, Rousseau, and Kant advocated founding societies on the basis of an agreement, or contract, which specified the principles of the government.
